Lionel has had an interest in being a radio announcer since he was at primary school in Otane, all too many years ago. So when the opportunity came his way to present a programme with a theme, it was not too hard to come up with "THEATRE THEMES" - a natural reflection of his extensive involvement with local theatre over many years.

His passion for the theatre is shared by his wife Judy, and they can often be seen at the Playhouse Theatre in Hastings, doing something in readiness for the next show.

"Theatre Themes" has developed into an interesting one-hour programme, where Lionel presents tunes from the many popular (and some not so well-known) stage-shows, giving a varied selection that so many listeners love to hear. At first, it was hoped the tunes would be recycled about once every couple of months, but the repertoire available today is much greater than first thought, and while many melodies are worth hearing more frequently, it is not unusual to hear tunes for a first time.
